On May 21, 2019, The Government of Japan announced the foreign recipients of the 2019 Spring Imperial Decoration, which is the first Imperial Decoration for the new Emperor, H.M. Naruhito. Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Al-Qaysi is among this year’s foreign recipients and, in recognition of contributions to developing Japanese studies and Japanese language education as well as promoting academic exchanges between Japan and Iraq, he will receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette.
Summary of Contributions
Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Al-Qaysi has played an important role for many years in improving Japan - Iraq cultural and academic relationship. In his role as the Assistant Dean of the College of Arts at the University of Baghdad, he recognized the importance of Japan as an academic partner. Prof. Dr. Al-Qaysi has been a strong proponent of promoting academic exchanges and introducing Japanese language studies in Iraq, in addition to pursuing signing a memorandum of understanding between the University of Baghdad and Chiba University in Japan.
