On 20th August, the Embassy of Japan hosted a cultural event introducing Ikebana, Japanese traditional art of arranging flowers, to Iraqi women. Zawraa Park and Department of Parks and Afforestation have kindly donated flowers for the event.
Ambassador Matsumoto gave welcoming remarks and spoke about the history of flower arrangements in Japan and its connection to love of nature and spirituality. He also hoped that by learning the Japanese style of flower arrangement, Iraqis, who already love flowers, could benefit more as private business owners in this field, noting that the flower business revenues amount to around 7 million dollars a year in Japan.
Two Japanese experts explained the philosophy of Ikebana and conducted a demonstration to show the guests the basics of this art. Afterwards, the guests enjoyed making their own arrangements under the guidance of the experts. After the demonstration, Kakigori, or Japanese shaved ice was served for the guests for a cool taste in the heat of summer.
