Chargé d'Affaires Mr. Masamoto visited Syrian refugee camps and IDP camps in Duhok Governorate

On July 22 and 23, Chargé d'Affaires Mr. Masamoto visited Duhok Governorate in the Kurdistan Region and was received by the Governor Dr. Ali Tatar Nerway and visited IDP camps and Syrian refugee camps in Duhok Governorate. The Governor expressed his appreciation for the Deraluk Hydroelectric Power Plant project (yen loan project), and also thanked Japan for its emergency humanitarian assistance (supplementary budget project) for IDPs and Syrian refugees.
There are more than 1 million Iraqis in the country who are still unable to return to their homes due to the ISIL invasion in 2014, and 140,000 of them are still displaced in camps.
In addition, the civil war in neighboring Syria that broke out in 2011 has left some 260,000 Syrian refugees displaced in Iraq.
The Japanese Government, in cooperation with UN agencies and NGOs, is supporting the activities necessary to rebuild the lives of those who have been forced to flee their homes and have lost their precious families and homes due to the ravages of war.
