The 70th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Japan Self-Defense Forces

On 5 June, Ambassador Futoshi Matsumoto hosted a Japan Self Defense Forces Day reception celebrating 70th anniversary of establishment of Japan Self Defense Forces in the presence of officials of Iraqi Security and Defense authorities and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ambassadors and military attaché of diplomatic corps, Defense Attaché of the Embassy of Japan in Iraq, Lt, Colonel Masaki Umetani, was also present at the reception.
In his remarks, Ambassador Matsumoto touched upon the fact that this year marks 20th anniversary since Japan Grand Self Defense Force (JGSD) was deployed in the city of Samawah to assist Iraq’s efforts for reconstruction, and acknowledged various contributions made by the JGSDF and the Government of Japan. He also commended the tremendous efforts of the Iraqi Government in realizing peace and stability, and expressed his hope that bilateral cooperation in the field of defense would be further strengthened.
