On 17 April 2019, the College of Arts, University of Baghdad witnessed the opening of the “Japanese Lab.” for the improvement of equipment for Japanese language facilities with the presence of H.E. Mr Naofumi Hashimoto, Ambassador of Japan to Iraq, Prof. Alaa Abdul Hussein, President, University of Baghdad, Ms. Hanaa Edwar, President of Iraqi Al-Amal Association, and Mr. Jamal Al-Jawaheri, Executive Director of the same association, which supported the implementation of the project that was established with financial assistance of 89,100 USD provided by the Government of Japan in celebration of the 80th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Iraq.
This project aims at improving the Japanese language facilities at the university as the system includes language learning hardware for one teacher and 36 students, Japanese language software, furniture and other appliances. The system also allows the students to enjoy online classes given live by professors at a university in Japan. It will benefit the regular students at the College of Arts (both morning and evening classes) as well as the students of the Japanese language course at the Life-Long Education Center at the same College.
It is worth mentioning that this grant comes under the scheme of Cultural Grant Assistance by the Government of Japan, which has carried out over 8 projects of this kind between 2003 and 2005 in Iraq, noting that this is the first such project in 14 years.
Anyone who is interested in learning Japanese can sign up for the open Japanese course at the Life-Long Education Center at the College of Arts. For further details about the course and for signing up, call Ms. Fatima on 0771 162 0707 or visit the Center.
