The Signing Ceremony of the Grassroots Project
Project for Elementary School Rehabilitation in Khanaqin District, Diyala
1. On November 21th, a signing ceremony to grant up to US $ 78,461 for the
project ”The Project for Elementary School Rehabilitation In Khanaqin District, Diyala”
was conducted at the Embassy of Japan in Iraq. The Grant Contract was signed by Mr.
Katsuhiko Takahashi, Chargé d' Affaires ad interim of the Embassy of Japan in the
Republic of Iraq, and Mr. Dana Hassan, Director of NGO “REACH (Rehabilitation,
Education and Community Health)”.
2. Mr. Takahashi expressed in his remark his gratitude to “REACH” and UNHCR Iraq
for their cooperation on this project. He said that this project would take down the
existing school building to reconstruct a new one with 6 class rooms in the city of
Khanaqin District, Diyala. He added that the project, managed by the NGO, was
expected to benefit more than current 28 students as well as teachers of the school,
and that would greatly improve the educational environment at the school.
3. Mr. Dana Hassan said that Japanese assistance had been highly appreciated and
that this occasion was important because the project would provide assistance in
rehabilitating a school to give opportunity and educational environment for the
children of the area. Ms. Shoko Shimozawa, Deputy Representative of UNHCR Iraq,
who introduced REACH to the Embassy of Japan in Iraq, commented that Japanese
assistance to Iraq had been excellent and that this project was very significant to
offer employments to the people of the area as well as the better access of education
to the children of the area.
4. This grant comes under the scheme of Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human
Security Projects by the Government of Japan. The Grass-roots projects bring about
immediate and direct effects on improving the living condition of the local
community. The Government of Japan has carried out over 90 projects of this kind
since 2003 throughout Iraq, in various fields including healthcare, education, poverty
and public welfare.
